Unpacking Appropriation in Wellness

  • ReikaYoga.com Long Beach, CA USA (map)

Social justice change-making operates on shared values of challenging limiting beliefs, breaking-down divisive barriers, and repairing harm when possible.

In this workshop, we will use a social justice framework to consider the sources, emblems, and power dynamics of cultural appropriation within wellness spaces.

We will also investigate the embedded nature of colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy that creates separation and harm within our lived experience.

As leaders, educators, and practitioners in the health and wellness industry, our focus will be

on reparation, advocacy and community building as we engage the following questions:

1.) What is cultural appropriation?

2.) What's the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation?

3.) How does cultural appropriation show up in our sacred spaces, wellness trends, yoga practices, and “conscious” capitalism?

4.) As teachers, leaders, health practitioners, and active students, what can we do about it – individually and collectively?

Calling-in compassion, wisdom, and discernment, we will explore these topics through brave discussion, journaling exercises, and meditative visualization.
